Teaching Resource?
I would start with showing students a video on cyber bullying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yG-7pldYvvQ
Depending on the grade level, I would use this website to help guide me into teaching a lesson on cyber bullying:
Hey Kailee, great information. I like what your plan is to help teach your students about cyber bullying, it really leads to a lot of problems for our students and could have horrific results. I found this article about a teenage boy who committed suicide because of all of the intense and personal attacks on him through social media and texting. He experienced it so much that his family transferred him to a private school, but the bullying didn't stop. It's really sad that all of this could have been prevented or perhaps intervened on more in regards to the school and police. Check it out, http://therivardreport.com/community-mourns-a-young-life-lost-to-cyberbullying/. I really haven't seen this at my current placement and I'm in the high school setting so I know my students are interacting on social media sites and texting. I don't know if there are any policies in place for this at my placement, but they are very lenient on technology use during the school day so I'm sure if there are, that they wouldn't be very strict. I feel in general, these problems are under reported and aren't advocated for enough in the schools. I feel that people are concerned they won't be heard or that nothing will be done if they report it, but I would hope that wouldn't happen. I hope that cyber bullying will be brought more into the forefront of conversations and that kids will stand up for one another. All of these social media and technological ways to communicate can most definitely be used in a safer, more effective way and we should be educating our students more about all of this.
ReplyDeleteMegan,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your input on cyber bullying. I also read your article and got a little emotional reading about it. It is so sad to see that even after he left the city, they were still harassing him. It amazes me that even with all the education that is out there about cyber bullying that is not talked about as much, seeing as how it something of the future for our students who are growing up with technology.
Part of the safety net with devices in schools is that communication is time stamped. IF the school allows devices, and IF someone sends a message during the school day, the victim can simply show a timestamp, and there's a conduct violation. The problem becomes when it occurs outside of the school day.
ReplyDeleteI think the hardest part about this topic is that it is so hard to prevent cyber bullying. Students are connected to each other in so many different ways now. That also means bullies can reach them any time of day no matter where they are. Students do not realize that one little comment can completely destroy another person. It's so easy to send a mean message or catfish someone when you only have to face a computer screen. I recently read a book , Backlash, that delved into this issue. The parents in here didn't get it either and one of the parents even helped her daughter bully another girl. It is so sad to think that students aren't getting the help they need. Nor are they being taught how much impact they can have on another life. Students also can't escape it because it happens outside of school.
